On this tour we will wander through the world of William III, who ruled alongside Mary II as England’s first and only joint sovereigns. The King’s State Apartments were commissioned in the 1690s as part of Hampton Court’s transformation into an elegant Baroque palace by Sir Christopher Wren. These rooms would once have been filled with beautifully dressed courtiers meeting, gossiping and playing politics. An elaborate staircase leads up to the King’s Guard Chamber, where a remarkable collection of weapons show-case William’s military reputation. His throne room, Privy Chamber and bedrooms can still be seen. The splendid decoration throughout was provided by artists and master craftsmen such as Antonio Verio, Louis Laguerre, Jean Tijou and Grinling Gibbons. We will also explore William’s Privy Garden on the South Front, which looks just as it did in 1702, in all its Baroque splendour.
