This gem of a museum is home to one of the world’s largest collections of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology and just a stone’s throw from the far better known and much busier British Museum. The collection belongs to University College London which celebrates its bicentenary this year and whose students of Dutch benefit from our ANS support: there are then many good reasons for visiting! The collection includes a vast array of objects from all facets of life including the oldest item of clothing, the first example of weaving and one of the earliest pieces of Egyptian linen, some items dating to close on 7000 years ago. So significant is the collection that in 1998 it was designated “of outstanding importance” by the UK government. Our guide will share insights into what the range of artefacts can tell us about everyday life in the Nile Valley so long ago and enable us to get up close and personal to these predecessors in our shared human history.
