Postponed : the Centenary Reception didn’t take place on the planned date due to the ‘Corona virus’
Dear Members and Guests,
The Society’s Council decided today that, for prudent health and safety protection, our Centenary Reception on 17 March should be postponed.
We have taken this decision with a heavy heart, but it reflects our collective, precautionary judgement, taking full account of recent developments over the COVID-19 virus, including Government statements. We have been in touch with the Royal Household at Kensington Palace and with the Netherlands Ambassador about our decision. We are sorry for any inconvenience to you caused by this decision, but trust that you will understand why it was taken.
Our intention is to re-instate a similar Centenary event later in the year and will send a further notice about this in due course. We are now working on all the necessary steps to dismantle all the practical and detailed arrangements for 17 March that were in place.
We hope that ANS Members will appreciate that almost all our costs for this event had to be paid in advance, of which a major part is unlikely to be recoverable, notwithstanding earlier efforts to mitigate our risk and protect or at the very least limit the Society’s exposure through various means. These costs amount to a cost per person well in excess of the ticket prices charged for individual Members. The differences would have been made up by generous donations from individual Members, our Patrons and the remainder from ANS resources.
We shall arrange postal distribution of the celebratory Centenary book as soon as circumstances allow.
With kind regards,
Dick van den Broek,
Chairman, on behalf of the Council
From the initial announcement in the Winter 2019 Newsletter:
Our long-awaited very special event! Members are requested to indicate their interest to attend, as soon as possible.
Following the update in the autumn Newsletter, we reported that our preparation of the Centenary Book was close to its final stage of printing. We also indicated the plan to present the book at a special occasion, most likely at a Centenary Reception which had been planned for Tuesday 17 March (date, venue and Guests of Honour have now been announced on various websites*).
This reception will now unfortunately not take place at this date.
The Centenary Book will be available free of charge to Members (one copy per membership). Recently joined Members may like to know that this anthology of essays about what the Dutch and the British have done together since 1920 has been in preparation by our volunteers, assisted by some professionals, for some two years.
